Day 1: SolidLine in Telluride – Reflections from the Interns

SolidLine in Telluride: Reflections from the Interns
By Ryne Knudson, SolidLine Summer Intern

The walls are adorned with the accolades of students past and present; and although school is out for the summer, there is still learning taking place inside Telluride Intermediate. A problem looms as large as the mountains that surround its fences and the classroom seats are filled with students capable of moving them.

Normally occupied by local children, the school played host to adults, all of whom in the medical profession, for a collaboration of minds vested in eliminating medical malpractice. The Telluride Patient Safety Roundtable, headed by Transparent Health, began on June 10 and the SolidLine truck pulled in this past Sunday to prepare for a full week of documenting its events. What is the third and final week in session, a third group of medical students, twenty some in all, descended upon the Rockies from as far as Australia to take part in the series of workshops and discussions designed to improve the system of communication between patients, caregivers, and all those involved in providing the public with health care.

During the first day, the SolidLine crew was able to capture several intriguing discussions; many led by founders Tim McDonald and Dave Mayer, centered on a number of issues. Some of which was highlighted by a previous SolidLine production in The Faces of Medical Error – From tears to Transparency: The Story of Lewis Blackman. The roundtable that ensued featured various viewpoints and valuable contributions were made across the room including, and especially, from Lewis’ mom, Helen Haskell, who provided a powerful and poignant account of the unfortunate situation surrounding her son’s passing.

In just the first 24 hours of activity the roundtable has already provided our crew with a great deal of content and, presumably, its participants with a broader perspective on quality patient care. All of which bodes well for the next few days and what will eventually be another SolidLine finished product.
