Dylan’s Intern Diary – Part 2

Dylan’s Intern Diary – Part 2

By Dylan Ptak, SolidLine Summer Intern

It’s been a busy past couple weeks here at SolidLine and it’s looking to get even busier. As some of you may already know I participated in the first annual ice cream eating contest here on the roof of the SolidLine headquarters. I entered the challenge as the underdog and full of confidence; little did I know that Ryne, my challenger, was an animal in the ice cream eating persuasion. He attacked the bowl like Joey Chestnut would a hot dog. I ate my little heart out, but every bite sent lightning bolts of pain up my newly chipped tooth. I don’t want to taint Ryne’s win, he would have probably beaten me skateboarding accident or not, but I was sent packing covered in ice cream and full of chocolate flavored shame. After my heartbreaking defeat in the ice cream eating challenge, I wasn’t sure how I would be able to show my chipped tooth face around the office again. Not to mention having to see that glorious trophy stare me in the face every morning from Ryne’s desk. Thankfully my dentist was able to squeeze me in and give me at least a slice of my dignity back.

I put my loss behind me and carried on to a shoot with SolidLine clients NCSBN. We were hired to make an orientation video at their downtown offices. This shoot was especially exciting for me because it would be my first on location shoot with the gang, and we had a freelance Steadicam operator joining the crew. I’ve always been fascinated with the Steadicam rig and the individuals who operate them so this was my first opportunity to get to watch and work along side one. Carl, who was our steadicam operator, was a very nice guy who was more then happy to answer all of the many questions I had for him and his craft. I thought the steadicam was utilized in very cool ways that will definitely make the NCSBN video stand out. Our producer Greg, DP Ed, and Carl all composed a pretty great tracking shot through the halls of the NCSBN offices to showcase the office and its employees. I was stationed towards the end of the tracking shot with the task of giving one of our talents the cue to begin walking out from a hallway and leading the camera into a boardroom where a meeting was taking place. After careful planning and great work by the staff of NCSBN, we were able to capture such a complicated shot in only two takes. I would say that shot was definitely the highlight of the NCSBN shoot for me and I commend all of those involved.

This Saturday the SLM crew and I will be packing up and hitting the road for a highly anticipated shoot with Transparent Health in Telluride, Colorado. Having heard nothing but great things about everyone’s experience with the Telluride shoot last year, I am very much looking forward to our trip and cannot wait to write all about it here.
